Design for Old Hong Kong
How is your past? Design for old Hong Kong is my undergraduate design and marketing group project. Every group has to choose one element to design a product related to old Hong Kong. The theme of the project has recalled my old days in Tai Hum Village which was already demolished. Hence, I used the stones that left in the original location of Tai Hum Village to design a watch to keep the memory of the village. I hope this product can bring a collective memory for those people who have experienced their lives in Tai Hum Village.

Idea Generation —
Watch was a signature product during the 1960s in Hong Kong. At that period, Tai Hum Village was the largest settle area in Hong Kong where I lived there for my whole childhood. As both watch and Tai Hum Village are meaningful to Hong Kong people, I combine these two elements for my design.

Inspiration —
I revisited the location of Tai Hum Village after its demolition. The stones left in the area reminded me the trip of visiting The Memorial of the Nanjing Massacre. I felt so moved for the 300000 stones there being put there to commemorate 300000 people who died in the war.

Exploration & Ideation—
Stones were collected from the village. Each stone in the village is unique with different shapes, sizes and colours. More, stones symbolise the memory and the stories in the village. Stones are put inside the mould to make silicone watch belt.

Prototyping —
A process of making silicone belt and core.

Design Process —
The signature archway of the village was used to be the display of the watch. In the later stage, it was designed for assembly.

SWOT Analysis —
Based on the features of the product, SWOT analysis is used to understand brand’s positioning, strengths and weaknesses.

Final Product —
Tai Hum Village is the only village under the Diamond Hill in Hong Kong. It kept shining at night from the lights being switched on by neighbours in the village. So I call the product as The Fragment of Diamond. The watch belt can be changeable so that buyers can make their personalised watch.
